Choosing a floor is so exciting and defining for a whole project. But when it comes down to the detail though it can be hard to decide which grout colour is best.
The grout line is the distance that separates one tile from another and is very necessary because it allows movement of the floors and natural settling due to structural movements, humidity, and variations in the environmental temperature.
Although necessary, not everyone likes the contrast created between the colour of the grout lines and the colour of the tiles. If this is the case, you should definitely look into rectified flooring (tiles with perfectly straight edges) which makes it possible to leave a much narrower grout line, starting at just 1mm.
The colour of the grout lines is important to reduce the contrast and creating the impression of a continuous surface, which modern spaces require.
Here are a few tips to help you when choosing your grout colours for a uniform look:
Look at the tone
Select a colour that is slightly lighter than that of the tiles: over time grout lines tend to get dirty and become darker.
Neutral colours
When using a product with many different shades, for example wood effect porcelain stoneware, it willl be better to use a neutral colour for the grout lines, pick one of the most dominant colour in the tiles. This will ensure a blend between the tiles and the grout lines.
Avoid white
Light colours get dirty more easily, especially on the floor and in spaces prone to soiling, like the kitchen, the entrance, and the garden. For a more durable option look at using epoxy grout, this is a silicon based grout and can be wiped clean as it is not so porous.
Choose a contrast
In some cases you have chosen a tile with lots of detail, you can choose to contrast the tile with the darkest colour in the tile. For example marble effect, this can really make the tile stand out and yet you still can achieve the continous flow look.
Test the product
There is a large variety of grout tones available on the market: we recommend asking your installer for a sample of colours and placing them next to the tiles to help you choose the most suitable tone.
